This tradition began after the end of World War 2, when several Leningrad schools united to celebrate the end of the school year in connection with the symbolism of the popular 1922 children’s book Scarlet Sails by Alexander Grin.
During the first celebration, a boat with scarlet sails sailed along the English Embankment and the Admiralty Embankment towards the Winter Palace.

Aleksandr Stepanovich Grinevskii (better known by his pen name, Aleksandr Grin, Russian: АлександрГрин, (August 23, 1880 – July 8, 1932) was a Russian writer, notable for his romantic novels and short stories, mostly set in an unnamed fantasy land with a European or Latin American flavor (Grin’s fans often refer to this land as Grinlandia).
Most of his writings deal with sea, adventures, and love.

“Scarlet Sails” is the story-fantasy of Alexander Green’s about unwavering belief in miracles and conquering, sublime dream.
The novel “Scarlet Sails” was written in Petrograd (the name of St. Petersburg in 1914-1924) . Alexander Green created it in 1922, drawing romantic moods and ideas precisely on banks of the Neva, Nevsky Prospect.
Perhaps that the Assol’s portrait he “had copied” with a stranger of the advertising lights on Nevsky Prospect, which he remembered in time of his first visit to St. Petersburg in 1906. A. Green identified himself with Captain Gray.

It happened in a small fishing village. The former seaman Longren raises his daughter Assol alone after losing his beloved wife, making a meager living by selling the toy boats he carves from wood.

Going on a fishing trip, Gray saw a beauty girl who was fallen asleep on the shore. He put on his ring at her little finger.
Gray heard a story from local people about a mad girl, which is waiting for the prince on a ship with scarlet sails. Collier told Gray that she is nota crazy, but a dreamer. The young captain was struck by this story.

Recently, I read a romantic novel by Alexander Grin "Scarlet Sails". A. Greene lived a very hard life. He had been in prison and went into exile, but managed to escape. It then began to write the story A. Green "Scarlet Sails", and in 1920 he graduated from it. This is the most famous work of A. Green. The writer has defined a genre of his work as a "spectacle." The story begins, as many literary works, with the characteristics of the main characters, but after reading quite a bit, I realized that this book is very special. In the story "Scarlet Sails" Green tells the story of the girl Assol, who lost her mother early and grew up with his father, they lived on what he was doing children"s toy-ships. Longren father gonna, take all of the work on the farm itself, daughter and father were very fond of each other. Yet Assol was unhappy as her one of the village children did not communicate. And she lived a single dream, which she presented to Aigle - known collector of songs, legends and tales. He told her that one day her prince will sail on a ship with scarlet sails and since gonna hopefully looking at the horizon of the sea, waiting for a ship with scarlet sails. The second main character in the story is represented by Arthur Gray, who on the contrary born into a wealthy family and had the same had a dream - to become a captain and he became to them. At age 15 he went to the ship as a sailor and for a time voyage captain Arthur taught various marine sciences. After four years of voyages, he returned home, Arthur took my parents a large sum of money to buy your own ship. And from that moment he sailed the seas and oceans captain. And once, during his next trip Arthur met Assol, which he liked. And learn about her dream, he decided, and sang it. I think that the main idea of the author of the story is that the man in your life you need to have the most cherished dream, believe and strive for it, and only if it is sure to be fulfilled. After Alexander Greene wrote this work is not the best time of my life, and probably, in my opinion, he wanted to make an example of dreams, faith and hope. Assol - the heroine of romantic stories, and closed beautiful girl, who was very fond of his father, only he trusted and lived the dream, which she presented to the storyteller. Arthur Gray - the freedom-loving people, a leader by nature, respecting the opinions of others, educated and intelligent, and walking purposefully toward their goals. All these qualities make of him a famous man. Longren - gonna father, her mentor in life, a loving father. In it the author tried to show a sample of how to be a father. In the story "Scarlet Sails" Alexander Green to express mood, feelings and spiritual mood of the characters often uses nature. I believe that Green would first like to say to the reader, that at any time of his life to live in the world of reality and dreams
Scarlet Sails
Who hasn"t had wild childhood dreams that we secretly hoped would come true? Alexander Grin wrote a book where they do. Written in the early 20th century, in the newly socialist Russia where realism and class struggle were supposed to be the ultimate goal in Scarlet Sails , a beloved Russian fairy-tale for adults and children alike, is a story about dreams coming true, no matter how silly or futile or far-reached they may seem.
(Because of this book, I even had a sailor suit when I was little:D)
Who hasn"t had wild childhood dreams that we secretly hoped would come true? Alexander Grin wrote a book where they do. Written in the early 20th century, in the newly socialist Russia where realism and class struggle were supposed to be the ultimate goal in art, this simple story pays homage to the romaticism and human everlasting need to dream and hope¹. And really, you"d be hard-pressed to find an ex-Soviet who is not familiar with this fantastical novella, a fairytale for children and adults.
¹ Despite this, the story was deeply loved by Soviet censors and public alike. The censors and the "higher-ups" seemed to take a stand that the titular scarlet sails were a direct allusion to the uplifting power of the Great October Socialist Revolution, the color of revolutionary romaticism. But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and, really, an attempt to find the glorification of revolution in this sweet escapist novella wold be pathetically far-fetched.
This is a story of a young girl Assol, a sailor"s daughter, ostracized by her village because of her father"s (justified) actions, who is told by an old storyteller on an old man"s whim that someday a ship under scarlet sails would come to take her away. This is a story of Arthur Gray, a boy from a rich family (in a castle!) who is noble and kind and dreams of becoming a sea captain. One day, their paths are meant to intersect and they will find happiness.
There are no major conflicts in this story. There are no twists. There is no suspense or mystery or any doubt about where this story is headed. It"s simple and straightforward. It"s tranquil, lyrical, and kind. And somehow it has some magic inside its pages that made the little Nataliya read this book so many times cover to cover until it literally fell apart. It speaks to our inner romantics who patiently wait for a bit of wish-fulfillment. It melts my cynical soul with its simple beauty.
It speaks to the heart of those who ever feel trapped in their lives wishing for something else, hoping that something or someone would interfere and take you away to something better. It speaks to those who have ever felt that they don"t fully belong in the world they live in, that they are meant to do something else, to experience other horizons beyond their houses and offices and routine lives. Alexander Grin must have felt that way, running away from home to become a sailor, pursuing romanticism and adventures in his imaginary land of Grinlandia when in fact he was trapped in the poor, militant, broken environment of his time.
Of course, I have heard the grumping about the inappropriateness of a young woman waiting for a prince under scarlet sails, of a couple falling in love at the first sight (or, in case of Assol, even before the first sight). But that"s what most of the fairy-tales seem to be about, right? And somehow it took over the heart and soul of kiddo Nataliya, a fiercely independent, headstrong and stubborn child (too stubborn for my own good, my mom used to say) - a girl who never played with dolls and would scowl at the idea of being rescued by a handsome prince - and made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside even now, when I reread it as an escape from recent emotional exhaustion. And it has a quiet message - sometimes we can make our own miracles, if we want them badly enough.
Four stars for the beloved childhood companion.
I"d recommend it, but I"m afraid I heard that the English translation is rather weak (I read it in Russian, of course). But here is the link to the 1961 movie (with English subtitles) that is mostly true to the spirit of the book, and is quite beautiful.

Read this as a kid and I think I liked it, but this time not so much. It"s got a fairy-tale plot, but not much of one, and knowing what happens already it just didn"t hold my interest. Insofar as the hero had a personality at all (the characters are more like archetypes), he was kind of pompous and annoying. The translation (from Russian) seemed a bit awkward in parts, and some of the images and metaphors didn"t really work too well for me -- like "She noticed nothing along the way, as when she Read this as a kid and I think I liked it, but this time not so much. Insofar as the hero had a personality at all (the characters are more like archetypes), he was kind of pompous and annoying. The translation (from Russian) seemed a bit awkward in parts, and some of the images and metaphors didn"t really work too well for me -- like "She noticed nothing along the way, as when she carried a hen which required all her attention." This was totally out of the blue -- it"s not as if they mentioned that she often carried hens around or something. The attempts at humor don"t translate too well either. Usually they"re in the form of a really corny scene with some "colorful" minor character who misunderstands what"s going on.

От разных людей он узнал историю девушки и то, что она ждет корабль с алыми парусами. Он сшил алые шелковые паруса, взял на борт знакомого бродячего музыканта Циммера и прибыл в деревню, где жила Ассоль. Девушка была поражена тем, что предсказание сказочника сбылось, и взошла на корабль.
Красивая нежная сказка о любви и о том, что нужно верить в хорошее будущее, быть добрым, не причинять никому боли и обиды, и жизнь твоя будет сказочной.
